THE HOST OF the MTV reality show Catfish has come under fire for an ill-considered tweet about domestic violence, which has in turn brought his own 2006 assault charge to the fore.
On Monday, Nev Schulman tweeted this picture in response to the controversy surrounding disgraced NFL player Ray Rice, whose contract was terminated after video emerged of him knocking his wife unconscious in an elevator.
The plot thickens, though – as Schulman was himself expelled from Sarah Lawrence College in 2006 after punching a woman at a dance.
In his recently-released book, Schulman wrote that he had been taking pictures at the party when he threw a punch at a woman who didn’t want him photographing her.
He says he had no idea that he had punched a woman, though eyewitnesses tell it differently. The college expelled him almost instantly.
Last night, Schulman defended his tweet in a statement about the incident, telling The Wrap:
In college, I was in a situation where I was forced to defend myself, after being suddenly attacked. Charges were brought, but my case was almost immediately dismissed as this was clearly a case of self-defence. My post was meant to raise awareness and support for everyone affected by the awful abuses of domestic violence.

THE HOST OF the MTV reality show Catfish has come under fire for an ill-considered tweet about domestic violence, which has in turn brought his own 2006 assault charge to the fore.

The overly-earnest nature of the tweet and picture was immediately ridiculed by other users:
